In Pailin, known for being the last outpost of Red Khmer, we donated 400 bicycles to students of two primary schools, Oproeus and Phum Thmey, situated in the countryside around the city. Being the risk of landmines still high in this region (in Cambodia, it is estimated that there are still 14 million unexploded mines), we wanted to make the journey to school easier and safer preventing children to take shortcuts through the fields.
The objective as well as to facilitate their access to education and reintegration into the school system is also to stimulate especialle the older students not to abandon school.
Besides we decided to help the already scarce educational personnel to travel to these disadvantaged peripheral areas, donating them a bicycle too.
Both schools have participated in the artistic twinning with Italy and have proudly exhibited during the delivery ceremony the drawings prepared by pupils and those received as a gift from the children of Dante elementary school in Bolzano.
Now the drawings of these children are brightening up the rooms of their peers in Bolzano.
