The project Sustainable Development by Water & Sun wants to increase development chances for small rural communities starting from a better use of the land due to poor techniques of desalination of sea water and use the principle of evaporation. The project began two years ago, it provides for the holding of three steps:
FIRST STEP: ENDED!
two years ago we organized a seminar with the Italian technicians at the school "Saint Francis" of Massawa to explain to a group of students and teachers the benefits of using a device, called "solar still" that allows to produce water drinking sea water desalination using solar radiation; it is a particularly suitable solution to be used mainly at poor communities, isolated and without electricity. During the stay it was made an inspection on the island of Dissei, Dahlak archipelago where lives a group of fishermen. On the island there are no sources of drinking water, so the people are in urgent need of equipment simple, inexpensive and easy to manage for desalinating seawater; without this equipment they will soon be forced to leave the islands. It 's been so decided that later the "solar still" will be mounted at this island.
SECOND STEP: RUNNING!
The equipment, purchased from an Australian company, has arrived in Massawa after a long and complicated transportation. Completed customs clearance, which lasted several months because of the bureaucracy, the experimentation. The equipment consists of 10 solar modules, pipes and fittings in PVC and a pump powered by a solar panel. During monitoriaggio, which provides for the operation of a single module, analyzes are made of chemical and bacteriological and will entail collaboration with an accredited laboratory of the Ministry of Water Resources in Asmara in order to receive the autorizzzione use of drinking 'water. Permission should be obtained before making operational the apparecchiaitura at the island fishing community of Dissei.
At this step we have to arrange the installation and operation of the equipment at the island of Dissei. Soon the official of the company that will install and operate the system together with a responsible school will carry out a visit to the island where in collaboration with the local community will identify where to install the system. It will also assess together the heads of the fishing communities also temporary solution to deliver to a household one or two modules leaving the members of the family management of the equipment for a period of several months before installing only final implantation. It must also train local people about how to properly operate the system
